The lockdown is the perfect excuse to kick back and relax. You can stay indoors, rock those pyjamas all day long and limit physical activity to kitchen food runs.

A break like that maybe great, but only for a few days!

If you keep it up for long, the side-effects on your health may be harmful.

The lockdown is a stressful time, and without proper care your physical and mental health may suffer as well.

However, since conventional ways to stay fit and healthy are unavailable (going for morning walks, hitting the gym, cycling, etc.), it is now time to think a little outside of the box. To help you along, we've put together some simple tips to stay healthy during the lockdown.

1. Eating well

You are what you eat! Therefore, you must pay attention to your diet during the lockdown - it is important not only for your physical health but also for your psychological well-being.

Even outside the lockdown, the benefits of a healthy diet are endless. It reduces the risk of chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, along with depression and anxiety.

The first step to eating healthy during a lockdown is avoiding processed foods. These have a high concentration of sugar that can lead to huge imbalances. Instead, you should regularly consume foods like fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

Along with building up physical strength, they provide important nourishment for your brain. Times like these can be stressful and trying. Hence, foods rich with prebiotics and probiotics such as yogurt can boost your moods and cognitive function.

2. Sound Sleep

Sleep is your body’s way to repair and rejuvenate. But sleep should also be regulated. Therefore, like following a schedule for eating and working, you should also maintain a regular sleep routine.

While everybody has their own body clock, most people find six to nine hours of sleep at night enough. Moreover, going to bed and waking up at a fixed time can create a sense of normality and help you think clearly during this lockdown.

Worrying about the current situation might give you sleepless nights. The constant mention and discussion of the situation can be overwhelming.

In such a situation, one of the best tips to keep fit and healthy is to limit your consumption of the news. By now, you know enough about the pandemic, and an obsession with learning more about the disease is unhelpful.

3. Exercising

You may be no stranger to the benefits of exercising. Not only does it keep you fit and active, but it also releases chemicals in the body that make us feel good.

Exercising is also linked to better sleep, reduced stress & anxiety levels, and improved memory and cognition. Hence, being physically active is a great way to ensure proper health in this lockdown.

Even though going to the gym or team sports are not an option anymore, you can still exercise at home. Many health experts recommend moderate exercise for 30 minutes every day.

If you cannot spare 30 minutes at once, you can divide this time into 10-minute sections throughout the day. Establishing a routine of 10 minutes each in the morning, afternoon, and evening will give you a sense of structure.

Moreover, many fitness instructors are offering their classes online during the lockdown, many of them for free. These classes include yoga, Pilates, home workouts, and videos on how to not gain weight during the holidays. Hence, all you need to get started is a reliable internet connection.

4. Connecting socially

Everybody needs family and friends for support, especially at times like these. Being socially connected is as important for your health as a good diet, physical movement, and sound sleep is.

You can use various online applications to stay connected to your friends and family. In addition to social media, you could organize video calls using various apps. This way, you can be adequately social while maintaining a distance.

5. Calming activities

Finding time can be difficult with our busy schedules, due to which many of us give up on our hobbies. However, the lockdown provides the perfect opportunity to pick up these activities once again.

Cooking, solving puzzles, craft, sewing, sketching, baking or reading might not strike you like things to do to stay healthy, but they go a long way in keeping your mind calm. This is extremely important given the stressful times we find ourselves in today.

Taking care of your health and well-being is of utmost importance, especially during this lockdown. By practicing self-isolation and following the tips mentioned above, you can stay healthy and sail through the lockdown. You could also look into buying a suitable health insurance policy. Knowing that you are financially covered against COVID-19 can give you added peace of mind. Hope this blog helps!
